The number “108” has long been considered a sacred number. In Hindu/Buddhist beliefs, there are 108 virtues to cultivate and 108 defilements to avoid, which speaks to the value of balance. Hindu/Buddhist Malas (rosary) also contain 108 beads. In Islam, the number 108 sometimes is used in place of the name of God. There are also 108 movements in Tai chi. Frequency with which the number 108 appears across religious disciplines is too great to be dismissed as coincidence.

Nine is the last of the single digit numbers and also the highest. In Hindu tradition this number being used to express many concepts and practices. E.G. Rishi Vyasa has created 9 Puranas, In the Vaisheshika branch of Hindu philosophy, there are nine universal substances or elements, In Indian aesthetics, there are nine kinds of Rasa. In the time dimension, number 9 is the principle number. According to Indian mythology, there are 4 Yugas (Ages).

  • SatYuga – consists of 172,800 years (1+7+2+8 = 18) = (1+8 = 9)
  • TretaYuga consists of 1296000 years (1+2+9+6 = 18) = (1+8 = 9)
  • DwaparYuga consists of 864000 years (8+4+6) = 18) = (1+8 = 9)
  • KaliYuga consists of 432000 years (4+3+2) = 9.

In Indian scriptures, letter 9 corresponds to Lord Brahma (the creator of universe).  9 is the only positive perfect power. It is supreme.

Now that we have linked 9 to 108. In Vedic mathematics the energy of a number is also evaluated from the sum of its individual digits.

  • 108 MahaPuran -Upnishads (1+0+8=9).
  • Mahabharat has 18 chapters (1+8=9),
  • Geeta has 18 chapters (1+8=9), and has 108000 Shloks (verses)(1+0+8+0+0+0=9).
  • And there are 54 (5+4=9) letters in the Sanskrit alphabet. Each has masculine and feminine, Shiva and Shakti (Yin and Yang). 54 times 2 is 108 (1+0+8=9).
  • The Mukhya Shiva-ganas (attendants of Shiva) are 108(1+0+8=9) in number, hence Shaiva religions, particularly Lingayats, use malas of 108 beads for prayer and meditation.
  • In Gaudiya Vaishnavism, Lord Krishna in Vrindavan had 108 followers known as gopis.
  • Recital of Lord Krishna’s 108 names, often accompanied by the counting of a 108-beaded mala, is often done during religious ceremonies.
  • It is said that Adiguru Shiva or Nataraja is the creator of the cosmic dance and there are 108 forms of dance in the Indian traditions.

All the ancient knowledge in India is associated with the universe. The number of 108 is the union between the microcosm and macrocosm.

  • In Vedic astrology, treats the Sun as God, and Sun has 12 signs (Zodiac signs). In Yajurveda, the Sun is related with Lord Brahma (the number 9), remember – 12 * 9 = 108
  • The diameter of the sun is about 108 times that of the diameter of Earth.
  • The average distance between the Earth and the Sun is 108 times the sun’s diameter.
  • The average distance from the Earth to the Moon is 238,800 miles, about 108 times the moon’s diameter.  This makes it so the moon appears the same size as the sun during eclipses.

“The ratio of 108 may be the key to finding planets hospitable to life outside of our solar system, just look toward this same size and distance relationship,” 108 is key to our being.

Now notice all these numbers …notice anything strange …..Yes all of them are multiples of 108 or perfect divisions of 108.

108, it shows in famous THE FIBONACCI SEQUENCE- The growing rate. A nautilus shell is found to illustrate the 1.08 progression, small to large, of the rooms or segments of its shell. In other words, as the sea creature grows, each chamber of its shell growth is 1.08 times larger than the last chamber, creating a logarithmic spiral within the exterior of the shell. it is not only happened in shell, it also happened in any kind of nature. You should admire the magic of nature.

In yoga when we start to drill down into our human form we continue to find the number 108 over and over again. According to Yoga, the human body has nine doors – two eyes, two ears, the mouth, two nostrils, and the openings for defecation and procreation. Were we to draw a five-pointed star (representing a human being) inside a circle (a planet) and we would find 108 degrees staring back at us from every angle. Deeper into the microcosm of the human being, it is said there are 108 energy lines, or nadis, converging to form the heart chakra, and 108 marmas (pressure points) or sacred parts of the body. And 108 degrees Fahrenheit is the internal temperature at which the human body’s vital organs begin to fail from overheating.

In yoga, the number 108 refers to spiritual completion. In one minute, we breathe in approximately 15 times, in 12 hours 10800 times, and in a day 10800 x2 times. It has been said that if one takes just 108 breaths in one day, they will reach enlightenment. That is why pranayama is often completed in cycles of 108, why japa malas are composed of 108 beads, and why sun salutations are often performed in nine rounds of the 12 postures (totaling 108). By practicing chanting, breath work, or asana in rounds of this sacred number, the ancient yogis believed we could align ourselves with the rhythm of the creation, and ultimately bring an end to our cycle of reincarnation. The practice of sun-salutation is to honor and activate the sun energy within you.

As per the Vedic system, this universe was created by the five elements: space, air, fire, water and earth. From these elements came the three attributes: Raj {birth}, Sat {protection} and Tam {destruction or death.} The mathematical or geographical evidence proves that one circle has 360 degrees in space. If we take a circle and start dividing it using the four elements and three attributes, all the logic can be observed. The circle itself, is considered the first element of space, since we must consume space in drawing a circle. In this space {or circle}, the four remaining elements and three attributes create the idea of time. The circle is divisible by the product of four elements multiplied by three attributes. This involves the belief that the three attributes exist in the circle. By moving three times, each element completes its revolution.

So now we have the number 12 (3 x 4). This division gave birth to our 12 months, and also to the 12 hours (1/2 of the day). We now have 360 degrees as well as 12 divisions. Add the time principle number 9, we can get 108 this code in our life circle.

We must agree that all measuring systems are merely reference frames. They give us a starting point. All science is based on fundamental assumptions of the mechanics of this universe. Yet, these assumptions, if correct, connect like building blocks. Much in the same way, the number ‘108’ is just a reference frame. It is symbolic of a bigger picture.

Galileo Galilei who said the universe is written “in mathematical language”—that the mysteries of creation itself could be unraveled through numbers and equations. That code is 108.
